Sprint final

Today the first medals of the European championships 2008 were awarded to the winners of the sprint distance that was held in Ventspils, the host city of the championships.

In the morning on qualification races the courses went through the streets of Ventspils where high speed was the main factor for qualifying to the final. However the sprint final was techically more difficult as it included not only running in the urban area - the largest part of the course was situated in the area closer to the sea, with detailed orienteering in the Ventspils open-air museum and the park area, still the fast running was very important also there. The final part of the course went throught the dune terrain, which turned out to be the most difficult part as many runners made mistakes exactly there.

The new champion in the men's class once again is Emil Wingstedt from Sweden, who won spirnt distance in the brevious EOC in Estonia two years ago. The silver medal was taken by Daniel Hubmann (SUI) and the bronze went to Adrey Khramov (RUS).
